In many Puerto Rican families there's someone who does it all: cooks, bathes, accompanies to appointments, gets up at night. And never asks for help, because "she's my mom" or "it's my duty." That person is burning out, and caregiver burnout isn't lack of love: it's a reality with consequences for their health, their work, and their family.

Family respite exists for that. It's a service where a professional caregiver takes the shift for a few hours, a few days, or on a recurring basis, so the one who cares every day can rest, work, or simply breathe.

What Family Respite (Caregiver Relief) Is

Family respite—also called caregiver relief—is temporary home care. A professional caregiver comes to the home and takes over the regular caregiver's tasks: company, meal support, personal care, supervision, and routines. The family caregiver steps out, rests, or tends to their own matters knowing their loved one is in good hands.

It's not abandonment. It's the opposite: it's making sure you can keep caring for a long time without breaking in the attempt.

Signs You Need Family Respite in Puerto Rico

If you recognize yourself in several of these, it's time to ask for help:

  • You sleep poorly or wake up several times a night keeping watch.
  • You feel guilty when you think about resting or going out.
  • Your health is paying the price: pains, chronic fatigue, postponed medical appointments.
  • You get irritated easily with the person you care for, and then feel terrible.
  • You've stopped seeing friends, exercising, or having a moment for yourself.

Asking for respite doesn't make you less dedicated. It makes you sustainable.

How the Respite Service Works

The process is simple. First, a no-commitment in-home evaluation: we meet your family member, their routines, tastes, and needs. Then we propose a plan: it can be a few hours twice a week, a full weekend a month, or coverage while you travel or attend a commitment.

Prices are the same as our regular services: companionship at $15 per hour (4-hour minimum visit: $60), greater assistance at $17 per hour (4-hour minimum visit: $68), with a 4-hour minimum visit. If the respite is recurring, a weekly plan (from $135 per week) provides continuity with the same caregiver.

Daytime, Nighttime, or Multi-Day Respite: Choose Your Modality

Daytime respite: the caregiver covers a few hours a day so you can work, run errands, or rest. It's the most common modality.

Nighttime respite (overnight): a fixed 8-hour shift for $110. Ideal if your family member gets up at night or if you simply need a full night's sleep. One night of sleep changes everything.

Multi-day respite: weekend or several-day coverage, for example if you're traveling or have a family commitment. Quoted as a plan according to hours.

Hospital respite: if your family member is hospitalized, companionship at $16 per hour covers day and night shifts so the family can rotate without burning out.

What Respite Includes (and What It Doesn't)

The respite caregiver does the same as you'd do: company, conversation, meals, hygiene and personal care support, routine reminders, and general supervision. They keep the routine your family member knows, so the change of caregiver feels as little as possible.

What we don't do: we're strictly non-clinical. We don't offer nursing, injections, wound care, or medication administration. If your family member requires clinical care during respite, we discuss it honestly in the evaluation and guide you.

The First Respite Is Hard: How to Make It Easier

It's normal to feel anxious the first times you leave your family member with someone else. It helps to start with short visits while you're in the house, leave routines and important quirks in writing (how they like their coffee, what time they watch their show), and keep the same caregiver in each respite to build familiarity. Over time, respite becomes a natural part of the family routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does family respite cost in Puerto Rico?

It uses our regular rates: companionship $15 per hour (4-hour minimum visit: $60), greater assistance $17 per hour (4-hour minimum visit: $68), minimum visit of 4 hours. The 8-hour overnight costs a $110 flat rate, and weekly plans start from $135 per week.

Can I ask for respite just for a weekend?

Yes. Respite can be one-time—a few hours, a weekend—or recurring. It's quoted according to the hours and modality you need.

Will the respite caregiver know my family member's routines?

Yes. In the initial evaluation we document routines, tastes, schedules, and needs, and we aim to assign the same caregiver in each respite to build familiarity.
